GIS Resources and Training

Welcome to the pages of Discovery Forest Services. This site is intended as a resource for organizations that are involved in the planning and implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

Contents

Geographic Information Systems A brief introduction to GIS, GIS implementation planning and typical GIS project phases.

GIS Resources This section has a host of links to GIS resources including educational, NGO, First Nations, Government and Vendor GIS sites.

GIS and First Nations Why GIS? Some community based objectives for GIS and links to potential sources of funding for First Nations GIS capacity building.

GIS Capacity Building Links to GIS educational resources, GIS training providers and detailed information about GIS training options offered by Discovery Forest Services.

Integrated Resource Inventories The content of any GIS-based inventory is necessarily politically determined, preferably by the people who make decisions based on the information derived from the GIS. This link takes you to a description of a GIS data-set assembled to address some First Nations issues.

About Discovery. Discovery Forest Services is a Vancouver based proprietorship that offers training and consulting in the areas of Geographic Information Systems, Global Positioning Systems and Resource Information Management. The objectives of Discovery Forest are to provide individuals and communities with the technologies, training and technical support that will promote community involvement in land use decision making and support well informed choices about natural resource use.

This web project has been up and running for over a year now and I'm pleased to say that it has been helpful to visitors from as far afield as Ethiopia and Haiti and as close to home as my friends at BCIT. Thanks to all those who have contributed with feedback, keep those cards and letters coming. New links have been added and dead links removed as of July 1998.
